W Wernicke, Carl The scientist who discovered the area of the cerebral cortex that allows us to understand language. People with damage in this area of the cortex are unable to understand spoken or written words. Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome A brain disorder characterized by the loss of the brain's ability to store memories.
