On
Children
National Families In Action believes that every child has the right
to grow up free of addictive drugs in order to reach his or her full potential.
On
Parents and Families
Research shows that children look up to their parents (defined as whoever
is raising them) more than anyone else for guidance and support as they
grow up. National Families In Action therefore encourages parents to use
this power to shape children's lives and protect them from becoming involved
with drugs.
On
Communities
National Families In Action believes that communities must reinforce parents
and families in their efforts to protect children from drug abuse. We
therefore encourage parent and family drug-prevention groups to work with
communities to create environments where children can grow up healthy
and drug-free.
On
Drug Use, Abuse, Addiction, and Drug-Related Deaths
National Families In Action believes that at least six disciplines must
be brought to bear on the drug problem and that each is equally important.
These include prevention, education, treatment, research, law enforcement
and international drug control.
On
Prevention
National Families In Action believes that prevention must be based on
the concept of preventing any use of drugs that are illegal in compliance
with international treaties and federal, state and local laws. Prevention
includes alcohol and tobacco for those who are under the legal age to
purchase and consume these drugs.
On
Education
National Families In Action believes that drug-education must be scientifically
accurate and must reinforce laws that prohibit drug use. Therefore, drug
education must contain a clear, unambiguous, no-use message based on the
harmful effects drugs exert on the brain and body and based on the law.
On
Treatment
National Families In Action believes that all people have the right to
live life free of drug addiction. Therefore, the goal of drug treatment
must be to return drug abusers and drug addicts to healthy, drug-free,
productive lives. We support the development and use of medications to
help addicts reduce their drug-induced cravings that often lead to relapse,
along with the provision of psychosocial therapy to help addicts rebuild
their lives.
On
Research
National Families In Action believes that basic biomedical research must
be conducted to develop knowledge about the ways drugs exert their effects
on the brain and body, to develop medications to treat addiction, and
to explore potential medical uses of analogues of addictive drugs. We
also support other research to improve drug prevention, education, treatment,
law enforcement, and policy.
On
Law Enforcement
National Families In Action supports federal, state, and local laws that
limit the availability of addictive drugs in the United States.
On
International Drug Control
National Families In Action supports international treaties that limit
the availability of addictive drugs throughout the world.
