Drug Use in Past 30 Days
Update On February 20, 2001, the second European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) released results of its 1999 survey. The first European survey covered 1995. This survey tracks drug use among 10th-grade students in 30 European nations. Researchers worked with America's Monitoring the Future Survey researchers to ensure that European and American results could be compared. In the charts below, the figures for drug use among U.S. 10th-grade students are from the 1999 Monitoring the Future Survey.

These charts compare cigarette use, marijuana (cannabis) use, and binge drinking among European and U.S. 10th-grade students during the past 30 days. The questions about binge drinking differ slightly. In the U.S. students are asked if they had 5 or more drinks in one sitting in the past two weeks. In Europe students are asked if they had 5 or more drinks in one sitting 3 or more times in the past month.
